I haven’t exchanged any communications with MMC in a little over a month. So I finally broke the ice and sent an email out to John asking him for an update on the project. I received an email back on 31 July 2009.
John explains that they were able to source a few of the harder to find items, including a set of doors. The doors immediately caught my eyes since 1968 Olds 4-4-2 Convertible doors are impossible to find. However, I was really pleased that they were able to find a pair. They also found a set of front fenders in relatively good condition with minimal surface rust on them. One of the remaining hard-to-find items was the trunk lid. I know through personal experience how hard this was going to be. Of the few that I found available for sale, each one had their own issues and effectively were no better than the one on the Olds.
They also found a Cowl that would be welded back after the old rust rotted Cowl is cut out.
MMC did a lot of metal work on the obvious areas and reassembled the frame so that it could be properly sand blasted to reveal all the other issues behind the years of paint, mud, paint, etc.
Lastly, more payments to continue to fund this project. Here are some highlights:
“We did find and buy good solid doors and a rust-free cowl and dash from the Arizona area. They were shipped on Monday and should be here next week. As you know, we already had purchased a set of fenders. We have a couple of people looking for a truck lid, but we have plenty of time for one to turn up.
“With the above in mind, we decided to get back on your car starting with replacing the rusted cowl and dash assembly beginning later next week. Once that is replaced, we will finish stripping the car and then remove the body from the frame. The frame will be placed on a rotisserie to complete rust repairs, the frame stripped and sent out for sand blasting. We have been waiting to locate these replacement parts and now that they are on the way, work will proceed more quickly.”
