Freddie from King’s Upholstery has been steadily working on the interior of the car. Prior to that, Freddie’s guys completed the installation and connections of all the wiring harnesses, interior electronics, electric windows, etc.
The interior is very challenging since we are attempting to make it completely different than what Oldsmobile had in mind back in the 1968 model year. Freddie is keeping up to the intent that I had since we first started this project. He is going to make a totally modern interior with modern electronics that is good enough to be in some of the best luxury or exotic cars. Originally, I was going to put in a beige interior since you cannot get white canvas top, cotton tops on only come in an off-white.
Once I showed up at Freddie’s shop with the car, he immediately started to go around my car and give me some great ideas. He showed me a GTO that was completed and ready for delivery. It was black on black and it just looked stunning. I really liked the red stitching on the leather, which really popped out. After a tour, I knew that I would want an all-black interior with the red stitching since my exterior is scarlet red with mild gold flakes. The electronics were very challenging as well. First the Painless wiring harness had to be connected up. Once that was completed, the keyless ignition system had to be installed. At first when the button was pushed the car would not start. It turns out that you have to push the button and press the gas for it to start. That’s how the older cars with a carb work without the help of a computer and fuel injection.
The lighting all around the car and interior are LED and the front lights are HID with a halo around them. We also made the rear tail-lights blink rapidly when the brakes are initially depressed so that the car behind me definitely will notice that I braked. Freddie had to build a custom bracket for the head unit and a custom bracket for the JL amps in the back. We also decided to place the low-profile JL 12” subwoofers on the floor of the trunk, raising the trunk about 5”. Freddie also double insulated the heat and sound shielding throughout the interior. One of the biggest challenges was to make the rear seating look integral to the car and match the Teas seats that I have for the front. His guys made a custom seat for the back from scratch and it looks very nice. Freddie also made the lines form the doors flow into the rear of the car. Here are two initial pictures of the progress.
I apologize ahead of time, Freddie does awesome work, but a photographer he isn’t! Hope you enjoy and feel free to comment or ask any questions.
